What Are CarPlay Live Activities Lyrics — and How Do You Get Them?

CarPlay Live Activities lyrics are real-time, karaoke-style lyrics on your car's Now Playing screen. iOS won't scroll Apple Music or Spotify lyrics on CarPlay by itself. A third-party app pushes each line through Live Activities — the same iOS feature behind Lock Screen widgets — so the words update as you drive.

I use this setup every day. My iPhone 15 Pro on iOS 26 feeds lyrics to the wired CarPlay screen in a 2020 Mazda CX-5, and to my partner's wireless CarPlay in a newer Kia. Once the right toggles are on, the current line just appears. No fiddling at red lights.

What are CarPlay Live Activities lyrics, exactly?

Live Activities is the iOS feature that shows live, glanceable info outside an app — on your Lock Screen, in the Dynamic Island, and on the CarPlay Now Playing display. It powers things like sports scores and delivery timers. A lyrics app uses the same channel to send the current line of your song to CarPlay, refreshing word by word as the track plays.

Apple documents the feature in its Live Activities guide. Neither Apple Music nor Spotify scrolls lyrics on the CarPlay screen on its own, so the app fills that gap. If Live Activities is off, the lyrics have no route to your car screen. That is why one setting makes or breaks the whole thing — our step-by-step enable guide covers that toggle in depth.

The 30-second test

Before you change any settings, check what you already have. This quick test tells you whether you're one toggle away or need an app first.

  • You're on an iPhone with iOS 17 or later. iOS 26 adds CarPlay widgets.
  • You have a lyrics app installed, like Lyricast or Musixmatch.
  • Your car or head unit supports CarPlay, wired or wireless.
  • You play music through Apple Music or Spotify.

All four true? You just need the toggles below. Missing the app? Start at Step 1.

Step 1: Get an app that puts lyrics in a Live Activity

Apple Music and Spotify don't do this, so you need a dedicated app. Open the App Store and download Lyricast. It's free to install, works with Apple Music and Spotify, and is built to put lyrics on CarPlay. Open it once so iOS registers it.

Any app that supports CarPlay Live Activities works here. If you already use Musixmatch, that's fine too — see our best CarPlay lyrics apps comparison to pick one.

Step 2: Turn on Live Activities for that app

iOS only shows this toggle after the app has run once. Then:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll to your lyrics app — for example, Lyricast — and tap it.
  3. Turn the Live Activities toggle on (green).

Don't see the toggle? Open the app, play a song for a few seconds, then check Settings again. It appears once iOS registers the activity.

Step 3: Allow Live Activities on your Lock Screen

CarPlay draws lyrics from the same Live Activity that shows on your Lock Screen. If the Lock Screen is blocked, CarPlay stays blank.

  1. Open Settings, then Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode).
  2. Enter your passcode.
  3. Scroll to Allow Access When Locked and turn on Live Activities.

A Focus mode can hide Live Activities. If you use a Driving Focus, allow your lyrics app under Settings, then Focus, so the lyrics still come through.

Step 4: Connect to CarPlay and press play

Now bring it together in the car.

  1. Connect your iPhone to CarPlay — plug in, or pair wirelessly if your car supports it.
  2. Start a song in Apple Music or Spotify.
  3. Watch the CarPlay Now Playing screen. The current line appears and updates as the song plays.

New to CarPlay? Apple's CarPlay setup guide walks through pairing. Once the lyrics show once, they show every drive — you won't repeat this setup.

Want lyrics on your own CarPlay screen? Lyricast sets it up in a minute.

The same Live Activity lights up several screens at once. Here's where the current line shows, and what drives each surface.

iOS 26 added CarPlay widgets, so some apps now show lyrics on the CarPlay dashboard too — not just the Now Playing screen. See our CarPlay lyrics widget guide for that setup.

When CarPlay Live Activities lyrics won't show

Sometimes the toggles are on but the screen stays empty. These are the usual reasons, honestly.

  • The app wasn't opened after install, so iOS never registered its Live Activity.
  • Low Power Mode is on. It can delay or drop Live Activities — turn it off to test.
  • A Focus mode is hiding the activity. Allow the app under Settings, then Focus.
  • The song has no synced lyrics yet, so there's nothing to scroll.
  • You're on an older iOS. Live Activities needs iOS 16.1 or later; CarPlay support is best on iOS 17+.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Apple Music or Spotify show lyrics on CarPlay by themselves?

No. Apple Music shows lyrics on your iPhone but not on the CarPlay screen while you drive. Spotify's lyrics don't appear on CarPlay either. A third-party app using Live Activities is the only way to see synced lyrics on the car display today.

Which iPhones support CarPlay Live Activities lyrics?

Any iPhone running iOS 16.1 or later supports Live Activities, and CarPlay lyrics work best on iOS 17 and up. That covers iPhone SE (2nd generation) and newer. iOS 26 adds CarPlay widgets, giving you extra places to see lyrics on supported cars.

Do CarPlay Live Activities lyrics work with wireless CarPlay?

Yes. Live Activities lyrics work the same on wired and wireless CarPlay. The lyrics travel from your iPhone to the car screen either way. If your car supports wireless CarPlay, pair once in Bluetooth settings, then play a song to see the current line appear.

Why do my CarPlay lyrics keep disappearing?

Lyrics usually vanish because of Low Power Mode, a Focus mode, or a song with no synced lyrics. Low Power Mode can drop Live Activities to save battery. A Driving Focus can hide them unless you allow the app. Turn both off to test, then replay the track.

Are CarPlay Live Activities lyrics free?

The Live Activities feature itself is free and built into iOS. The lyrics app may charge, though. Lyricast is free to install with a paid tier for unlimited lyrics, and Musixmatch needs Premium for full CarPlay lyrics. Try a free version first to confirm it works in your car.
