Device availability is the real gate

Spotify draws a line between the apps it builds and the surfaces it merely plays through. On a phone or tablet you tap the Now playing bar, scroll to Lyrics, then tap for full screen. On desktop and the web player the lyrics button sits in the playback bar.

Step outside those apps and the picture changes. Spotify's note about other devices is short: lyrics may not be available on all devices. Speakers, smart TVs, consoles and car head units all fall under that line. None of them are promised a lyrics view.

Song-level availability changes daily

A track can sit in the catalogue with no lyric data behind it. Spotify adds new lyrics every day, so a song that is blank today may not be blank next month.

There is no public list of which songs are covered. The practical test is the only test: play the track and look for the Lyrics card. If a whole album is blank, the rights deal behind that catalogue is the likely reason, not your account.

Markets: the same song, a different country

Two people can play the same track on the same phone model and see different things. Spotify ties availability to market, because those rights agreements are negotiated market by market.

This is why forum answers age badly. A thread from 2024 describing a regional limit may be accurate for that country and that month, and useless for yours. Check your own screen before trusting a checklist.

Lyrics preview is a separate feature

The preview is the small block of words that appears under the album art or over Canvas while a song plays. It is a mobile feature, it is on by default, and it can be switched off in the Now Playing view.

One exclusion is worth knowing: Spotify states the lyrics preview is not available on music videos. If you switched to a video version of a track, the preview disappearing is expected behaviour rather than a fault.

The screen Spotify does not cover: your car

Car head units appear nowhere on that list, and the same page adds that lyrics may not be available on all devices. So the dashboard is the surface you cannot count on, whatever your plan or country.

How to check availability on your own account

Work through these in order. Each step rules out one cause, so stop at the first one that changes the result.

1. Play a well-known chart track. If the Lyrics card appears, availability is fine and the earlier song simply has no lyric data.
2. Check the surface. Phone, tablet, desktop and web all have a lyrics view; speakers, TVs and car screens may not.
3. Open the full Now Playing view rather than the mini bar, then scroll down. The card sits below the artwork.
4. Confirm you are on a track, not a music video. The preview is excluded on videos.
5. Update the app. An old build can miss a view that shipped later.
6. Compare with a friend in another country if a specific album stays blank. A market difference shows up straight away.
